Birmingham's population is just under 1 million but due to its large ethnicity it will brake the 1 million mark again, its not as cosmopolitan as Manchester which has half its population because its too close to London which brain drains Birmingham, Leeds is Britain's, 3rd most populated city. - Mark Howell

STOP CHUCKING OUT POPULATION FIGURES YOU ARE CLUELESS ABOUT YOU MORONS! - Nathan Hazlett
People are so misinformed on this subject it is painful.
I have been studying urban demographics for years and here are some things to consider-
1) There is an important difference between 'City Proper' - the area covered by the City Council and the entire Metropolitan area. So the CITY of Manchester DOES NOT have 2.6 million people- that is the entire metropolitan county of Greater Manchester including distinct towns like Bolton, Oldham and Stockport
2) Difference councils use different criteria. The City of Leeds for example includes towns such as Wetherby and as such the population given is misleading. Other cities would include only the immediate built-up area. My own city, Sunderland is like Leeds- the official population includes neighbouring towns
3) To a lot of people here- don't throw out wild population figures with no source whatsoever
